Lot 406

Description

Munich School,
late 19th century-

Portrait of a female saint in prayer, standing half-length, holding a crucifix;

oil on canvas, 70 x 57 cm.

Provenance:
Property from a European Private Collection.

Note:
The present work very much recalls the approach of artists from the Munich School, both in its religious subject matter, and in its technique, defined by a handling of the paint which is at once delicate and highly-finished, and, conversely, somewhat Impressionistic, much like the work of Gyula Benczúr (1844-1920), who trained at the Munich School. The present scene also gestures towards Gabriel von Max's (1840-1914) quietly dramatic portraits of religious figures, including that of Katherina Emmerich, which is now held in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich [7739].

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
