Lot 231

Description

John Piper CH,
British 1903-1992 -

Customs House, Poole, 1951;

gouache and collage on paper, 55 x 37.8 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
Hans & Elsbeth Juda;
private collection and thence by descent

Literature:
S. John Woods, 'John Piper Paintings, Drawings and Theatre Designs', Faber & Faber, 1955, illus. no.2 (in colour)

Exhibited:
Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield, ' "In our view": some paintings and sculpture bought by Hans & Elsbeth Juda between 1931-1967', May - June 1967, no.100 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame)

Note:
the collection of Hans and Elsbeth Juda also included works by William Scott and Christopher Wood. Hans Juda was the founder of 'The Ambassador', an export journal for textiles, an Elsbeth was a photographer, who took portraits of Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland and Piper, amongst other art world figures. The catalogue had a preface written by the celebrated critic Robert Melville.

The building depicted is in fact the Guildhall in Poole and not the Customs House - although both have a similar style of entrance.
