Description
Sir Stanley Spencer CBE RA,
British 1891-1959 -
First Study for 'Opening Graves for the Resurrection' (with 'Portrait drawing of Lady Slesser' on the reverse), 1920-21;
pencil and wash on paper, inscribed and dated along right edge 'Slessers 1920-21', 23.4 x 26.3 cm (ARR)
Provenance:
Mrs Annette Lovell and thence by descent
Exhibited:
Royal Academy of Arts, London, 'Stanley Spencer RA', 20th September-14th November 1980, no.151, cat. no.54 (label attached to the reverse of the frame)
Note:
this work is a study for 'The Resurrection, Cookham, c.1920-21', originally owned by Henry Lamb, that was sold at Roseberys in 2022 as part of the collection of the Descendants of Arthur Tooth Gallery. Spencer lived with Sir Henry and Lady Slessers in the early 1920s creating works for their private oratory.
The Resurrection is perhaps Spencer's most important theme, re-positioning the Biblical narrative of the Last Days to the present day setting of his beloved hometown of Cookham. There is a gentle atmosphere to the scene, with the dramatic translated into the colloquial; for Spencer the divine existed in the everyday.
