Lot 2

Description

Vera Willoughby,
British 1870-1939 -

Orientalist scene;

oil on panel, signed with monogram lower right, 32.3 x 40.8 cm

Provenance:
Victor Arwas Gallery, Éditions Graphiques Ltd., London;
the Estate of Jill and Michael Barrington, purchased from the above (confirmed by Éditions Graphiques Ltd.)

Note:
a number of works by the artist were in the collection of Countess Spencer, which was sold by Christie's in 2017.

Willoughby fused an art deco style, with it emphases on a sculptural depiction of the human body and sense of decorative design, with an often mythological subject matter. Here she takes on an Orientalist theme, its female subject in control of the two men around her, to create a highly individual scene. Willoughby was particularly celebrated for her 1925 book, 'Visions of Greece', with it illustrations of Classical myth set against her experiences of the country. She produced posters for the London Underground, which are now in the London Transport Museum, and designs for the ballet, working with Cyril Beaumont and George Barbier, amongst others. A number of these designs are in the V & A Collection.
