Lot 117

Description

A slice of fruit cake from the wedding reception at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the marriage of Princess Elizabeth (Queen Elizabeth II) and Philip Mountbatten, (Duke of Edinburgh), 1947, the cake in a white cardboard presentation box with silvered crown lettering to the top: EP / BUCKINGHAM PALACE / 20TH NOVEMBER 1947, not sealed, the box 3cm high, 6.8cm wide, 10.5cm deep

Provenance: By repute, presented to Gianna Maidment while living at 6 Wilton Place, thence by descent to the present owner.

Note: Designed by a Mr Schur, chief confectioner at McVitie and Price Ltd, and intricately decorated, the lavish four-tier wedding cake of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten stood at 9ft-tall.  As rationing was still underway, the ingredients for the 500lb fruitcake were flown to the UK from South Africa and Australia, where they had been donated, earning it the nickname 'the 10,000 mile cake'.  It was cut by Prince Philip with his ceremonial sword and produced 2000 slices for guests, with hundreds further sent with hand-written notes to various charities and organisations across the globe.
