Lot 328

Description

George Elgar Hicks, RBA,
British 1824-1914-

Utilising Church metal;

oil on canvas, signed and dated 'G.E. Hicks. 1868.' (lower right), 45.7 x 61.1 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 5 June 1991, lot 164.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Hicks was best known for his genre scenes, which were heavily influenced by the works of William Powell Frith (1819-1909). Hicks's paintings are typically imbued with an idealised, somewhat sentimental, atmosphere, often with a strong moralising tone, like contemporaries such as Frith and Augustus Egg (1816-1863). In the present work, Hicks has depicted a historical scene, with figures in 17th-century clothing, who appear to be Puritans from the Civil War era, ripping up the metal which marks a memorial on the floor, whilst a figure hidden in the darkness furtively slips out of a door to the left of the scene.
