Description
William Heath Robinson,
British 1872-1944-
The Homely Peasant;
watercolour and chalk on paper, signed 'W. / Heath / Robinson' (lower left), 57.3 x 45.3 cm.
Provenance:
with The Fine Art Society Ltd., London.
Exhibited:
March 1945, The Fine Art Society Ltd., London, no.59, according to the label attached to the frame.
Note:
The present work is something of a departure from the humorous cartoons for which Heath Robinson was best known, with his depictions of fantastical, impossible contraptions leading to the coining of 'Heath Robinson' as an adjective. The present scene, with its more sombre, introspective atmosphere, reveals the influence of an earlier generation of Dutch Hague School artists, such as Josef Israëls (1824-1911).
