Description
Circle of George Romney,
British 1734-1802-
Portrait of a lady, by repute Elizabeth Ann Sheridan, bust-length, wearing a brown wrap;
oil on canvas, 38.1 x 31.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The loose handling of the paint imparts the present work with a haziness which recalls Romney's dreamy portraits of elegant sitters, including in his famous study of Lady Hamilton as Circe, now in the collection of the Tate [N05591], and a 'Portrait of a lady, said to be the actress Ann Crouch', which sold at William Doyle, New York, on 10 November 2021 (lot 99).
