Description
Andreas Schelfhout,
Dutch 1787-1870-
A sailing boat on choppy waters, with a steamboat beyond;
oil on panel, signed 'A. Schelfhout' (lower right), 23.5 x 36 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
While best remembered for his picturesque ice skating scenes, leading Dutch Romantic artist Andreas Schelfhout was also a prolific painter of maritime scenes, and the work presented here is a typical example.
The present scene is likely datable to the 1840s, when Schelfhout produced several similar seascapes. A larger panel sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 29 April 1998, lot 304 (£86,870), and features a closely related fishing vessel in the foreground. Another similar work is illustrated in Cyp Quarles van Ufford, 'Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870). Landschapschilder in Den Haag', Leiden 2009, p. 166, no. 175.
The paddle steamer with the cloud of black smoke billowing from its chimney stands in stark contrast with the humble fishing vessel in the foreground, and shows the incongruous and rapidly changing landscape of a world in the midst of industrialisation.
We are grateful to Christiaan Lucht MA for confirming the attribution to Schelfhout on the basis of photographs, and for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
