Description
North Italian School,
early/mid 17th century-
Study of a crouching male nude;
red and white chalk on laid paper, 26.3 x 17.9 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present drawing, which shows a muscular male nude in a dramatically twisted pose, shows the clear heritage of Annibale (1560-1609) and Agostino Carracci (1557-1602), whose revolutionary, naturalistic approach to painting influenced generations of artists to come. It is possible that the as yet unidentified artist of the present drawing was active in the Emilia-Romagna region, near the Carracci's Bologna, and the dramatic approach to the figure's anatomy, as well as the stark use of highlights, shows some similarities to the works of Ferrarese master Carlo Bonone (1569-1632), in particular his frescoes at the Church of Santa Maria in Vado, Ferrara. We are grateful to Dr. Roberto Contini for his kind suggestions for the preparation this catalogue entry.
