Lot 8

Description

An impressive George V silver gilt cup and cover.

Skinner & Co.,

London, 1913.

Raised on a square base, the cup of Campana form with cast lion handles and floral garlands applied over a chased wave band, the part-lobed body engraved with arms (apparently a variant on Wood quartering another; the arms and motto suggest the Hill-Wood family) and raised on a circular foot with leaf and lobe decoration, the spirally fluted cover with floral mid-section and a knopped finial, the base later inscribed with four Italian quotations comprising one by Josemaria Escriva, one by the Late Pope John Paul II (Giovanni Paolo II), one by the poet, Metastasio, and one from Guicciardini's 'Ricordi', 62.5cm high, total weight approx. 214ozt

With thanks to Penelope Gay and David Crellin from the History of Bath Research Group for their assistance in identifying the arms on this cup.

Inscriptions and translations:

Josemaria Escriva

Your daily encounter with Christ takes place where your fellow men, your yearnings, your work and your affections reside. The sky and the earth seem to merge down there, on the line of the horizon . But no, it is truly in your hearts that they blend, when you live a holy, ordinary life.

Giovanni Paolo II

La tenerezza é l'arte di sentire la persona tutta intera. Tutta la sua anima, tutti i moti del suo sentire. Pensando sempre al suo vero bene.

Tenderness is the art of truly understanding a person: their entire soul, all the movements of their emotions. Always thinking of their true well-being.

Metastasio

Se a ciascun l'interno affanno si leggesse in fronte scritto, quanti mai che l' invidia fanno ci farebbero pietá.

If each person's inner struggle were written on their forehead, how many of those who provoke envy now would arouse our pity.

Guicciardini's Ricordi

Piccoli principi e a pena considerabili sono spesso cagione di grandi ruine o di felicitá; peró e grandissima prudenza avvertire e pesare bene ogni cosa benchè minima.

Small principles and barely noticeable things are often the cause of great ruin or happiness; therefore, it is of utmost prudence to carefully consider and weigh everything, no matter how small.

Research conducted by members of the History of Bath Research Group suggests that this cup may originally have belonged to Sir Samuel Hill-Wood (1872-1949). Sir Samuel was the only child of Samuel and Anne Kershaw Wood and his father was one of the sons of John Wood who established Howardtown Mills in Glossop. Sir Samuel became MP for the High Peak in 1910 and held the constituency for 19 years. He served as a Major in World War One and gave his home, Moorfield, over to the Red Cross to be used as a convalescent hospital. In 1912 (the year before this cup was hallmarked), he changed his surname to Hill-Wood by royal license. Hill was the maiden name of his paternal grandmother who died when his father was a young child. He was created a baronet “Sir Samuel Hill-Wood of Moorfield” in 1921.
