Description
André Lanskoy,
Russian 1902-1976 -
Promenade du Soir, 1960;
oil on canvas, signed lower right 'Lanskoy', titled and dated on the reverse 'Promenade du soir 60', 60 x 73 cm
Provenance:
with Galerie Ariel, Paris, no.10146 (according to the label attached to the reverse);
private collection, London, purchased from the above in the 1990s
Note:
Galerie Ariel on rue Haussmann was purchased by Jean Pollak in 1952. Pollak was a daring dealer who launched the careers of Karel Appel and Pierre Alechinsky in Paris, and ardently promoted the work of the CoBrA group. He also showed the likes of Serge Poliakoff, Albert Bitran and Henri Goetz.
The present lot is a classic example of Lanksoy's work from the 1960s, where his titles become more lyrical. The bright pastel tones can be seen in other works from this period. Lanskoy spent the majority of his career in Paris, where he befriended Nicolas de Stael and the two held a joint exhibition in 1948. From the 1950s, he was considered one of the leading post-war leading abstract painters along with Dubuffet, Fautrier, Poliakoff, and Soulages.
