Untitled, 1989;
oil on paper, signed and dated on the reverse 'Rose Wylie Summer 89', 74 x 54 cm (ARR)
Provenance:
private collection, purchased directly from the artist, and thence by descent
Note:
Wylie draws from her everyday surroundings and nature along with images from her memory from mass media. Source materials of newspaper clippings and magazines cover the floor of her studio in Kent. The simplicity and nativity to her work creates a stark directness.
The artist, who is now in 90, received recognition late in her career, with The Tate Britain holding a solo exhibition of her work in 2013. In 2010, Wylie was the only non-American artist in the Women to Watch exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C., and in 2015 she became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts.
