Lot Footnotes
Note: The Cary family firm was regarded as one of London's leading globe publishers from the late 18th until the mid-19th century. Run by map seller John (c.1754-1835) and his brother William (c.1759-1825), an optician and maker of nautical instruments, they were renowned for the high-quality of their paper and for making globes from entire new plates, rather than the amended copper plates used by their competitors. In around 1820 the Cary brothers moved their business to 86 St James's Street, leaving their premises at 181 Strand to John’s sons George (c.1788-1859) and John Jr. (c.1791-1852) who continued to produce high quality globes as G & J Cary until about 1850.
