Lot 299

Description

Anna Zemánková,
Czech 1908-1986 -

Untitled;

gouache, ink and pastel on paper, signed lower right 'Zemánková', 31 x 21.5 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
Outsider Archive (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame);
private collection, London

Exhibited:
Arts Council Touring Exhibition, Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, 'In Another World: Outsider Art from Europe & America', 13th June-19th July 1987, touring to Milton Keynes Exhibition Gallery, 25 July-30 August; Wolverhampton Art Gallery, 5 September-11 October and five other museums through 22 May 1988, cat. no.92

Note:
the Arts Council exhibition was curated by Robert Malbert and featured essays by Victor Willing and David Maclagan. Other artists exhibited were Henry Darger, Madge Gill and Sava Sekulic.

This intricate yet ethereal work encapsulates Zemánková's unique language, that now sees her as one of the most internationally celebrated artists associated with the concept of 'Art Brut'. With no formal training, her work became known to Jean Dubuffet, who included it in the Collection de l’Art Brut Lausanne. She became known more widely following exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery in London in 1979 and more recently her work was included in the 2013 Venice Biennale.
