Description

Cartier. An Art Deco French gold, mother-of-pearl and lacquer (lacque burgauté) diamond, coral and onyx vanity case, the rectangular gold case with black lacquer and tinted mother-of-pearl inlay front and back panels each depicting a Chinese scene, the interior each lacquer panel with four inlayed Chinese characters, the case sides with chased corners and coral corallium rubrum baton thumb piece to black lacquer and old-brilliant-cut diamond collet terminals, signed Cartier Paris, Londres, New York, numbered 0761, French Poinçon for the maker Boulon & Taragnat, French assay marks for 18ct gold, circa 1925, dimensions 8.5 x 5.7cm

The Chinese scene on the front depicts a government official with large fan attended by two servants in a garden and lake or pond, the back with similar scene, the text on the interior reads 'Guan shang jia guan', a pun on guan meaning both hat and official or hat over hat which interprets as rank above rank, and 'Lian ke ji di', meaning continuously passing exams also a word pun meaning both continuous and Lotus hence the scene of the lotus pond.

Accompanied by a document of expertise, number XP2240-170225, dated 17th February 2025, from International Antique Jewelers Association Expertise, (IAJA), Paris, stating that in their opinion the piece is a genuine Cartier item

 

 

Fine crack to one interior lacquer panel running across one corner, fine crack running across other panel all appear stable, general light wear to the gold case from general handling, gross weight 89.9g, US bidders please note that the coral may be subject to restrictions when imported into the US

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

(ARR) - ARTIST'S RESALE RIGHT

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.

It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods
