Ernst Paltscho was an Austrian court jeweller who initially worked with his father Carl in his jewellery business which he had established in 1881, and which was located on Mariahilfstrasse. In 1889 Ernst moved to Vienna and established his own company. He was soon given the title of Court Jeweller and in 1914 he was joined by partner Emil Biedermann, the firm being re-named Biedermann & Paltscho. Their patrons included the King of Greece and many Austro-Hungarian aristocrats, and he was known as ‘Jeweller to the Kings’.

In 1818 Paltscho opened another branch in Karlsbad which was managed by his son Erwin. Paltscho then split with Beidermann and in 1922 moved premises to Am Graben 14. Ernst died in 1929 and Erwin took over the business and would continue as sole proprietor until the 1960s. Paltscho jewellery excelled during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period producing beautifully made pieces incorporating diamonds, precious gems and hardstones to great effect. The firm exhibited all over Europe and in New York, ever increasing their clientele. Their distinctive jewellery was inspired by natural fauna and flora, producing in the 40s and 50s their famous carved gem and rock crystal flower brooches and other jewellery. Erwin last exhibited in 1964 and his legacy lives on as collectors today appreciate the unique quality of Paltscho’s creations.
