On Wednesday the 21st of June Roseberys are thrilled to present a strong sale of over 400 lots covering jewellery from the 18th century to the present day - with a very good selection of large diamonds and gemstones - as well as collections of pens and watches. Diamonds are a prominent feature of this month’s auction, and the sale culminates with an exceptional highlight in Lot 443; a stunning round brilliant-cut diamond single stone ring of 6.09 carats. Set between radiating baguette diamond shoulders, the diamond is accompanied by a report confirming that it is graded as G colour and VVS2 clarity.

 

 

Lot 440: A sapphire and diamond pendant, claw set with an oval mixed-cut sapphire

 

The sale also presents a number of impressive sapphires likely to appeal to those who collect, or simply appreciate for their rarity and alluring colour. Lot 440 is a sapphire and diamond pendant featuring a dazzlingly saturated blue Sri Lankan sapphire weighing 24.13 carats. The oval mixed-cut stone is accompanied by a laboratory report stating that no heat treatment had been detected. Sapphires of such gem quality that have not been heated to improve colour are rare. Lot 439 is an elegant pair of sapphire and diamond ear clips, in which each sapphire weighs approximately 9.0 carats. They are of a beautiful well-matched ‘Ceylon’ colour with good transparency and life. These ear clips also include a lab report stating that no heat colour enhancement had been detected. Lot 442 is a single sapphire ring of approximately 10 carats with a reported origin of Burma, the second most important locality for sapphires after Kashmir.

 

Lot 438: A rare Melo melo pearl and diamond ring

 

Several beautiful pearl pieces are sure to garner great interest from collectors, including lot 438, a rare Melo Melo pearl and diamond cluster ring. Melo Melo pearls (also known as Dragon Pearls) are believed to be the rarest in the world and cannot be cultured. They take at least a decade to form and are composed not of nacre, but calcite and aragonite, which gives the pearls their characteristic ‘flame’ and porcelain appearance. Another pearl highlight is lot 430, a pair of early 19th century diamond and natural pearl pendant earrings, dating to around 1820. The pearls in these earrings have a lovely lustre are well-matched and beautifully set off with old -mine and rose-cut diamonds. Natural pearls of good gem quality such as those in these earrings are rare, and their appeal is furthered by the original retailer’s case.

 

Lot 165: August Frederik Hollming for Fabergé (1854-1915)

 

Central to the sale are 78 lots from the collection of the late Barry Lock, comprising: cufflinks, stick pins, and other items of fine jewellery. Barry was known as an avid collector of silver, paintings and antiques and was celebrated for his skill in acquiring quality objects. The collection of cufflinks is sumptuous in its variety and interest. Highlights from the collection include lot 165, a pair of ruby, diamond, and mother-of-pearl cufflinks by August Frederik Hollming for Faberge, a pair of interchangeable sapphire set baton cufflinks by Van Cleef & Arpels (lot 164), and a pair of French Belle Époque diamond and enamel cufflinks.

 

 

Lot 217: Corum. An 18ct white gold manual wind wristwatch with peacock feather dial Circa 1970

 

Roseberys will be offering a choice selection of wrist watches from the 1970s and 80s, some with unusual dials and bracelet designs, including a Corum manual-wind wristwatch with peacock feather dial (lot 217), a Swiss bracelet watch with tiger’s eye dial and carved tiger’s eye link bracelet (lot 236), and two Delaneau watches with lapis lazuli dials (lot 239 and 240). Other watch highlights include lot 197, a Vacheron Constantin watch in great condition, which will surely please the Vacheron Constantin market which is particularly strong at present. One of the premium lots is a lady’s white gold Patek Philippe wristwatch, circa 1965, with diamond-set bezel (lot 220 Ref:  3345, Case Number 2685214, Movement number 1167845). Rolex watches are forever popular and included in the sale is Lot 213, a Rolex stainless steel and yellow gold automatic calendar bracelet watch, Circa 2014, Date-just 31, Ref: 178243. Other watch highlights include: Lot 208, a Pasha de Cartier stainless steel automatic chronograph calendar bracelet watch; Lot 211, a Ulysse Nardin platinum automatic calendar wristwatch with second time-zone; and a highly desirable Marcus & Co. Belle Époque platinum and diamond lapel watch by the American maker Marcus & Co (lot 290), for which the original illustrated design can be found in the Jewellery Design Books of Jaques and Marcus. In addition another great item is a Belle Epoque pendant watch of gold, diamond and enamel with movement by LeCoultre (lot 288).

 

 

Lot 390: A late 18th century gold mounted patch box pendant, in the form of a lady’s head

 

Other lots that are expected to attract significant interest at auction are Lot 437, an octagonal emerald (11.80 carats) and diamond pendant from Columbia; Lot 390, a late 18th century gold mounted patch box pendant of painted porcelain in the form of a lady’s head wearing a black masquerade mask (a popular theme of its day); and Lot 313, a pair of interchangeable assorted gemstone earrings by Marina B, designed circa 1980. These terminate in an interchangeable polished gemstone bead. 

 

 

Lot 111: A 19th century gold mounted citrine and amethyst dip pen

 

Within the collection of pens on offer are a group of unusual early 19th century Bramah type gold mounted and hardstone dip pens. These include an attractive citrine example with amethyst seal top in a Collingwood Ltd. fitted case (Lot 111). A Victorian gold mounted combination propelling pencil and dip pen with turquoise set serpent detail (lot 100) is also likely to garner interest. The collection as a whole is sure to appeal to worldwide collectors of antique writing implements.
