Roseberys’ November Old Master, British & European Pictures auction consists of 502 lots, spanning the 17th to the early 20th century. The sale features a particularly strong selection of studies, prints and works on paper by high-profile artists at entry-level prices.

Lot 19: Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, Dutch 1606-1669- The Death of the Virgin
Estimate: £5,000 - £7,000

A refined portrait study by the celebrated Regency portraitist Sir Thomas Lawrence is a particularly significant lot in the sale, alongside a striking work by Art Nouveau icon Alphonse Mucha. As well as his better-known graphic works, Mucha also produced several contemplative drawings of female nudes, typically executed using delicate pencil lines which impart his studies with a great sensitivity.

Estimate: £8,000 - £12,000

Autograph versions of larger works will also be offered, such as a study by Nikolai Dmitrievich Dmitriev-Orenburgsky for his ‘Sunday (Easter) in a Village’; a preparatory portrait sketch by Sir George Hayter for his ‘House of Commons’ on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London; and a version of the Croatian artist Robert Auer’s ‘Temptation of St Anthony’ in the National Museum of Modern Art in Zagreb.

Additionally, the sale boasts impressive prints by seminal artists including Rembrandt van Rijn, Francisco de Goya, Théodore Géricault, and John Martin. Topographical collectors will find highlights such as John Glover’s atmospheric Ullswater landscape and a series of rare hand-coloured prints: Thomas Daniell’s depictions of India, Pietro Fabris’ Campi Phlegraei volcanic studies, and Angelo Campanella’s detailed renderings of Emperor Antoninus Pius’s Roman palace.
