Roseberys are delighted to offer a strong and diverse range of important Design pieces from 1860 to the present day. The sale will offer three fine and impressive single owner collections, including a collection of unique studio pottery works by Bernard Rooke, a striking collection of Doulton Lambeth pottery, and a collection of rare and beautiful Lalique scent bottles, as well as further works from the Estate of Deirdre Burnett. Further highlights include scarce early 20th Century works by Archibald Knox and Gabriel Argy-Rousseau, and important Post War Design pieces by Jean Cocteau and Gio Ponti. The sale also boasts a strong Studio pottery section with works by the likes of Ewen Henderson, Lucie Rie and Hans Coper.

Fresh off the back of Roseberys’ world record breaking hammer price for a Jean Cocteau plate, we are delighted to offer another fine example. Lot 11, 'L'Esprit Minéral', is number 10 from an edition of 10 and was produced in 1962. This piece shows Cocteau at the height of his graphic powers. Made of earthenware and decorated in enamels, this visually striking piece features stylised faces set within an arrangement of geometric decoration

In the Arts & Crafts section of the sale, Roseberys are delighted to offer Lot 59, a terracotta and brass sundial designed by Archibald Knox for Liberty and Co. Produced circa 1900, this incredibly scarce piece seldom comes to auction. Decorated with stylised flowering roses and Celtic knot motifs to the base, this lot is certain to enhance the landscape of any garden.

Lot 130 is a striking and beautiful ‘Grosse Fleur’ plafonnier pendant light by Gabriel Argy-Rousseau. Produced circa 1923, the diffuser made in the form a flower was produced in ‘Pate-de-Verre’, a technique which involves the layering of paste made from powdered glass in a mould before firing. This work comes to auction with a pre-sale estimate of £3,000-5,000.

 

Lot 13 is a rare and important coffee table designed by renowned Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti. Produced circa 1953, Ponti entrusted the realisation of this complex design to master cabinetmaker Giordano Chiesa. This design exemplifies Ponti’s clever marriage of form and materials, with a clear glass top revealing the intricate geometric oak supports below. This lot comes to auction from an important private collection with a pre-sale estimate of £10,000-15,000.

Lot 19 is an incredibly rare ‘Sunball’ lounge chair. It was designed by Herbert Selldorf and Günther Ferdinand Ris for Rosenthal in 1969, one of approximately 30 examples which were produced, according to Selldorf. The height of 1960s luxury, the ‘Sunball’ lounge chair was originally designed as an outdoor sun lounger, featuring a rolling sun screen and extending seat, and was originally produced with optional speakers and lights. Certainly a statement piece, this space age lounge chair comes to auction with a pre-sale estimate of £10,000-12,000.

Lot 344, ‘Table Rose’, is a creation from the mind of Yves Klein, a seminal figure in Post War European art. Klein was a pioneer of performance art and was infamous for his radical and experimental attitude towards art. He is also renowned for creating an entirely new colour, International Klein Blue. Klein produced two prototype tables in 1961, just before his death. This now iconic table was then fully realised under the guidance of Klein’s widow in 1963, with a limited number being produced each year by the Estate.
