The Design Since 1860 sale at Roseberys includes not only items of furniture and smaller decorative objects, but also examples of design in the form of wall art or wall hangings. Current trends in interior design allow for eclectic choices which can help form the foundation for your room’s style.
Wall art in different mediums can help bring a sense of texture into the space, for example hanging a tapestry adds visual weight to your interior.
Lot 277: Jean Lurçat (1892-1966) for Tabard Frères & Sœurs
'Le Bouc Ocre' very large Aubusson tapestry, 'No. 2631', circa 1950
Rosebery’s Design Since 1860 sale (March 2023) includes this exciting tapestry in wool signed by Lurcat within the weave. It is a huge statement piece – measuring 240cm x 296cm - and an opportunity to own an exemplary example by the man credited with the revival of the art of tapestry in both design and technique.
Lot 12: William Morris (1834-1896) for Morris & Co.
Pair of 'Tulip and Rose' pattern hangings, design registered 1876
William Morris is a name synonymous with the Arts & Crafts movement and the idea of the beautiful home, so these Tulip and Rose hangings could elevate any space. Whilst the design dates from the 19th century and might be a welcome addition to the period home, these could look striking against a contemporary white wall.
Selecting a piece for your wall can form the basis of your room’s eventual colour palette, or be used to completement other accessories that are already there.
Lot 4: Doulton Lambeth, possibly by George Woolliscroft Rhead (1855-1920)
Large 'Persian' pottery dish with Iznik motifs, 1874
This charger produced at Doulton Lambeth is bursting with exciting patterns and would look striking against a wall painted in the same soft flesh tone as the border of the dish.
Another alternative to paintings, is to opt for framed posters. The Design Since 1860 sale, also offers a chance to buy vintage posters which provide an ‘on trend’ means of providing a focus to your walls. The December 2022 sale included posters from the Art Deco and Art Nouveau eras with not only attractive imagery but also with interesting and visually appealing text, such as this example advertising Modern Art at the Kunsthalle in Karlsbad in 1913.
Sold in the past December 2022 sale
Wall art is that finishing element that can help pull a space together and make it feel complete, and sourcing from auctions – whether its tapestry, ceramic, or lithographic print - offers a great opportunity to find something a little more unique.
