On 19th July, Roseberys’ Old Master, British and European Pictures Sale will go under the hammer, featuring exquisite pictorial examples from a variety of artists, schools, and genres. These include - to name a few - three striking oils by the eminent Anglo-Hungarian painter Philip de László; a serenely beautiful landscape by Iosif Evstaf'evic Krachkovsky; some extremely fine examples of 17th-century English portraiture (John Closterman and the Studio of Sir Peter Lely); a fantastic oil by Alfred Stevens; ten canvases by the studio of Miguel Canals; and much more besides. This sale is dedicated to over 500 years of art history, from the early Renaissance period to the first years of the 20th century, featuring a variety of media including oils, watercolours, drawings, and prints.
Lot 224: Alfred Stevens, Belgian 1823-1906- An interior with a woman by a cradle
There are several highly anticipated lots in this catalogue. For example, lot 224 is a never-before-seen-on-the-market canvas by the Belgian painter Alfred Stevens. The painting, showing an interior scene with a woman and a cradle, is coming to auction with an estimate of £8,000 to £12,000.
Lot 30: Studio of Sir Peter Lely, English / Dutch 1618-1680- Prince Rupert of the Rhine (1619-1682)
Lot 30 – the extremely fine portrait of Prince Rupert of the Rhine painted in the Studio of the Baroque master Sir Peter Lely - has an estimate of £7,000 to £10,000. Another ‘royal’ portrait on offer is ‘The Queen’, an oil by the Austrian artist Edouard Veith, signed by the artist centre right. It is lot 230 and has an estimated price of £5,000 to £7,000.
Lot 31: John Closterman, German / English 1660-1711- Portrait of a young man
Lot 31 by the German painter John Closterman comprises a further highlight. Closterman was celebrated for his portraits European royal and noble families. This large (128.5 x 105.4 cm.) portrait of a young man comes to Roseberys with an estimate of £5,000 to £8,000.
Lot 126: John Nost Sartorius, British 1759-1828- The kill
Lot 126 ‘The Kill’, was executed by the British painter John Nost Sartorius – who was best-known for his horse-riding and hunting scenes – and has an estimate of £4,000 to £6,000. The oil on canvas work comes to auction from a private UK collection and with prestigious provenance which includes Arthur Ackermann & Sons, The Parker Gallery, and Lady Alexandra Naldera Curzon.
Lot 235: Philip Alexius de László, PRBA, Hungarian / British 1869-1937- Spanish Dancers
Final stand-out lots which are sure to garner interest at the upcoming auction are three paintings by the Anglo-Hungarian painter Philip Alexius de László. De László found great success painting European imperial families as well as his high-society and prominent contemporaries. Lot 235, ‘Spanish Dancers’, is signed and dated (1927) by the artist and has an estimated price of £15,000 to £20,000. Lara L’vov-Basirov, head of the sale, has commented that “these three stunning portraits by de László are definitely ones to watch!”
