"We are honoured to be working once again with the Estate of Agi Katz, founder and director of Boundary Gallery, on this special sale focused on the work of her close friend Josef Herman (1911-2000). This is one of the best collections of his works to ever to come to auction."

-  William Summerfield, Head of Sale and Specialist | Modern British & 20th Century Art

Agi Katz (1937-2021) was a hugely influential and respected curator, art dealer and gallerist, promoting the works of Jewish and émigré artists in Britain. Roseberys are delighted to be working once again with her Estate, following on from our extremely successful sale in May 2022, which included master works by David Bomberg, Jacob Epstein and Mark Gertler.

Lot 12: Josef Herman OBE RA, Miner in Landscape

Lot 14: Josef Herman OBE RA, The Miner, Ystradgynlais, 1948

This special sale is focused on the work of her close friend Josef Herman (1911-2000), whose work Katz exhibited at the Boundary Gallery from the 1990s. This is one of the best Herman collections to come to auction, and includes ‘The Miner, Ystradgynlais, 1948’ (lot 14) and ‘Miner in Landscape’ (lot 12), both iconic images of the post-War era and the artist’s experiences with the working people of South Wales.

Lot 16: Josef Herman OBE RA, Refugees: Three Figures and Child, Glasgow, 1940-41

As both Katz and Herman were refugees to the UK, it is particularly fitting that this sale will include Herman’s extraordinary work ‘Refugees: Three Figures and Child, Glasgow, 1940-41’ (lot 16). Boundary Gallery are very proud to be offering their proceeds from the sale of this work to The Refugee Council.

The Refugee Council is a leading charity working with refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK. Founded in 1951, following the creation of the UN Refugee Convention, it exists to support and empower people who have fled conflict, violence and persecution in order to rebuild their lives here in the UK.
