Meet Naman Chaudhary ( @naman.m.chaudhary )
Naman writes about gardening, art and history after completing his MA in Journalism from Dublin. He grew up in Delhi where he worked for Vice India and led heritage walks. Here he picks his five favourite lots from the upcoming Arts of India auction that will take place on Tuesday 14 June, which he commented was : ‘Quite hard as there were so many wonderful pieces I loved.’

Lot 28: A carved brass spherical huqqa base, possibly Lahore, India, late 17th century, of globular form,with short slightly flaring neck marked with a flange at its base and ring midway, with cut out flowers possibly intended for silver or enamel inlay, 17.4cm. high
Estimate: £1,000- £1,200
Lot 159: A Mughal portrait of the Emperor Akbar the Great (r. 1556-1605) with his children Jahangir and Prince Murad, Mughal India, late 16th century, opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, Akbar stands to left in a white jama with black floral sash, holding his younger son who wears a white and red hat and gold tunic, his older son depicted waving and with a small leopard on a leash, to reverse an identifying inscription in black in Persian and in Devanagari, image 11.2 x 7.2cm. Provenance: Deceased estate, UK The scene of this miniature painting is very close to another depicting Akbar holding the infant Jahangir with a minister, attributed to circa 1600-1620 and sold at Sotheby's New York, March 22, 1989, Lot 60.

Lot 138: An illustrated Jain Vijnaptipatra scroll, Udaipur, India, late 19th/early 20th century, opaque pigments on paper, divided into registers, depicting scenes of palace life, rulers and courtesans feasting and being entertained, battles, shrines, figures from epics, within an outer floral border on yellow ground, 16cm. x approx. 520cm. Vijnaptipatra are letters sent to Jain monks by the community, inviting the spiritual leaders to spend the monsoon in their hospitality. Lot 7: A Greek style terracotta of Buddhist Donor, Gandhara, 3th-4th century, the mouth depicted open and displaying teeth the broad forehead with recessed urna, the hair set back on waves, mounted on plinth, without plinth 22cm. high Provenance: Acquired Spink & Sons 1977-78.
