Highlights from the sale include a collection of Madge Gill postcards. Gill, an outsider artist with a modest career spanning over 40 years, was guided to produce her work by a spirit named ‘myinnerrest’ (my inner rest). Gill never sold any of her works during her lifetime but, exhibited a number of times at the Whitechapel Gallery, after her death in 1961 thousands of works were discovered in her home and since then, like many outsider artists her work has gained recognition and a strong following. Her works are held in international collections including The Whitechapel Gallery, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Collection de l’Art Brut in Switzerland.
Included in the collection on offer is a very rare gouache pair of postcards – rare because the majority of her works of female portraits and abstract patterns were only in pen and ink however, these have been finished in gouache
Also included in this sale is a collection of pieces by the urban artists Burning Candy Crew members; Sweet Toof, James Jessop, Cyclops, Harry Pye as well as their contemporaries James Howard, Sam Dargan and Gavin Nolan.
