Lot 16: Josef Herman OBE RA, Refugees: Three Figures and Child, Glasgow, 1940-41
This highly moving scene was made when Josef Herman first moved to Glasgow and reflects the shared experience of those fleeing the conflict and persecution of the Second World War. In Glasgow Herman became part of a vibrant group of émigré artists in the city, including his friend Jankel Adler and Benno Schotz. He exhibited in Scotland and taught at Glasgow School of Art, influencing a younger generation of artists including Joan Eardley.
