Central to Roseberys' September Modern British & 20th Century Art sale is The Estate of Jill and Michael Barrington (lots 1-31), which includes works by Simeon Solomon, Jacob Epstein and Edward Seago. Jill Barrington worked as an interior and fashion designer and built up an important collection of costume designs and art deco pieces, seen here in the works by Alastair (lots 9-13), Charles Gesmar (lots 14-15) and Vera Willoughby (lot 2). Jill and Michael Barrington were not born into a world of art collections, but over sixty years of marriage they discovered and cultivated a shared love of the arts in many forms.

Michael Barrington built up a carefully considered collection of Antiquities acquired from reputed dealers and from auctions at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Bonhams. His Greek red and black figure pottery works comprise pieces by esteemed painters such as the Achilles painter, the Allard Pierson painter and the Heron painter. His acquisition of an array of fine Etruscan bronzes and Corinthian pottery with wonderful mythological scenes rounds out a group of works distinguished in their quality and collective mastery. These antiquities will be sold as part of Roseberys' Antiquities, Islamic and Indian Arts sale on Friday 25 October.
