Roseberys' September sale presents over 500 lots of jewellery and watches, dating from the Medieval era to the present day. A number of private collections are included in the sale, including items from the estate of Michael and Jill Barrington, and jewellery from the collection of the late Jane Sinclair Morpeth, which features a number of interesting pieces by contemporary jewellers such as Frances Wadsworth-Jones and Zoe Arnold. One of the highlights of the sale is a private collection of unmounted briolette cut diamonds, being sold in six lots with a total pre-sale estimate of £95,000. The six lots feature a mixture of drop shaped briolette cut diamonds and taviz shaped briolette cut diamonds, the later following the shape of traditional Indian amulets and likely being Indian in origin.
The sale features a number of signed jewels from sought after European houses, many coming from the estate of Michael and Jill Barrington, including an emerald and diamond hoop brooch by Lacloche Frères (lot 510), a pair of earclips and a ring by Cartier (lots 505 & 506), and a collar necklace by Lalaounis (lot 507). From the same estate comes one of the highlights of the watch section of the sale, a European Watch Company bangle watch with Cartier France dial, circa 1940 (lot 205).
Amongst the watches we are also pleased to offer a number of Rolex bracelet watches, including Datejust, Air-King and Precision models, as well as a bi-colour Datejust model with rare United Arab Emirates Armed Forces dial (Lot 213).
From the collection of the late Jane Sinclair Morpeth comes one of the antique highlights of the sale, a 19th century French demantoid garnet set grasshopper brooch (lot 503). Demantoid garnets were frequently used at the turn of the century for jewels in the form of snakes, frogs and lizards, chosen for their bright green hues and high brilliance, and this grasshopper brooch is a particularly nice example. Another of the antique highlights comes in the form of a gold longhain (lot 502), with former Austro-Hungarian Empire marks for Prague, circa 1820. It’s rare to see chains of this age and length, as many ended up shortened and broken up in the intervening centuries.
Lot 503: A late 19th century French gold, diamond and demantoid garnet grasshopper brooch
We are pleased to also present a number of items of natural pearl jewellery including rings, pendants and necklaces, the highlight being a single row natural pearl necklace (lot 528) of a good size and lustre, and well matched. Natural pearls are rare and it can take years to match a good strand.
One final highlight, and a department pick, is lot 546, an Art Deco platinum, diamond and gem-set tropical bird brooch. The brooch features French marks, and is a textbook Art Deco jewel in the stylised motif and its use of buff-top coloured stones.
