Introducing Olive Guest and the Takes5 chosen by her from the upcoming Modern British & 20th Century Art auction taking place on Thursday 8 December.
Olive is an artist and co-founder of Glebe House Devon, a guest house, restaurant and 15-acre smallholding offering art and food experiences set in the heart of East Devon. It was recently awarded B&B of the year by the Times and was one of four UK hotels to feature on the Conde Nast Hot international List 2022. Olive's paintings are inspired by her beautiful surroundings in nature. She has previously exhibited in Greene and Stone on Fulham Road and is currently exhibiting with North Coast Asylum in Newquay and Act One Art in Great Titchfield Street. Art being a central feature in the guest house, Olive has also curated her own gallery space which features pieces from carefully selected local talent in the restaurant areas of Glebe House.
‘River through the woodland’, This scene resonates with me, it feels familiar and makes me think of long afternoons relaxing with friends. Even though they aren’t facing one another, there is a sense of ease and companionship within the group, they all seem content.
Lot 107: William D. Clyne, Scottish 1922–1981 - Flower Seller; oil on canvas
Flower seller, I just think this is such a joyous piece that reminds me of Sunday mornings on Columbia Road. I love the texture that the artist has created. It almost feels like it could be made into a print.
Lot 341: Margaret Hunter, Scottish b.1948 - Zig Zag Concert, 1995
Zag concert. I love the energy in this painting, it reminds me of being in a carnival. There is a lot of depth here too, with some lovely subtle warm colours which you can see underneath more muted gray background. I love how the artist has created these layers.
Lot 156: Fred Uhlman, German/British 1901-1985
Landscape at sunset. I’m very much drawn to the simplicity of colour palette and depth of the green with the flash of red. It feels serene but also in some way quite romantic.
Lot 296: Meyer Uranovsky, South African b.1939 - Seascape with a sailing boat, 1971
Seascape with a sailing boat.
I’m completely drawn in by the drama and rich colour. In amongst everything, the boat feels safe and sturdy and that it could stand up against the elements.
