Estate Of Deirdre Burnett (Lots 142 - 176)

In studio pottery and contemporary ceramics, this sale offers a substantial collection of works from the estate of the late Deirdre Burnett, who worked primarily in porcelain, creating delicate vessels inspired by natural forms, and latterly producing stoneware vases and bowls with lava glazes.  Some works echo those produced by Lucie Rie, who, alongside Hans Coper, was one of Burnett’s tutors at the Camberwell School of Art & Design in the 1960s.

Lot 141: Jacqueline Poncelet (b.1947) Studio Pottery and Contemporary Ceramics

Other well-respected female potters represented in this sale include Janet Leach, Gabriele Koch and Jacqueline Poncelet.  Poncelet was part of a group of radical female artists (along with Elizabeth Fritsch, Carol McNicoll, Jill Crowley, Glenys Barton and Alison Britton) graduating from the Royal College of Art in the late 1970s who laid the foundations for 'The New Ceramics' movement, and sought to re-establish the ‘vessel’ as an abstract form.

Lots 280: Pierre Chapo (1927-1987)  Model 'T14 D' dining table, circa 1985

Lot 281: Pierre Chapo (1927-1987)  Six model 'S45 A' dining chairs, circa 1985

Roseberys are delighted to offer two lots by the French designer Pierre Chapo:  a ‘T14 D’ dining table (Lot 280) and six ‘S45’ chairs (Lot 281). After his initial foray into painting in the late 1940s, Chapo eventually settled on woodwork and carpentry, developing a life-long fascination with organic materials and their sculptural qualities. Influenced by modernist contemporaries such as Charlotte Perriand, Chapo opened a gallery in the 13th Arrondissement of Paris, where he sold his own creations alongside the works of designers such as Isamu Noguchi.
