Roseberys' Jewellery & Watches sale (Tuesday 25 June) is comprised of an impressive 500 lots. The sale will include a section of fine antique Jewellery representing various periods dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries, as well as Belle Époque and Art Deco period pieces, to the present day. Featured in the sale is a rare collection of Italian provincial Jewellery. The sale also includes many signed pieces from well-known Jewel Houses and established designers.
Representing the antique section is a Victorian diamond tiara (lot 503), from the property of a Lady. Noble style jewels such as historic tiaras are seldom seen on the open market now, and this one is a particularly charming example.
An interesting collection of items comes from the estate of Eileen Gray (1878 - 1976), including an alluring Victorian diamond brooch set with old brilliant cut diamonds and in original fitted case (lot 502), and an early Victorian gold and turquoise serpent necklace (lot 428). Gray was an Irish furniture designer and architect with no formal training who became a pioneer of the Modern Movement in architecture.
Roseberys’ are delighted to be offering in the sale a number of lots from the collection of Sidney J. A. Churchill (1862 - 1921). Churchill was a British diplomat and a collector of Renaissance and Oriental manuscripts, and of jewels, bronzes, pictures and other antiques. He was posted in Palermo (1898 – 1909) and Naples (1909 – 1912), and during this time focused his collecting on Italian and Sicilian folk jewellery, and researched and published on the history of gold and silver work in Italy. One of the highlights of the collection on offer is a 17th century gold enamel and rock crystal reliquary cross pendant with hinged back (lot 308), a rare piece to see on the open market.
Moving on chronologically Roseberys are offering two fantastic emerald and diamond jewels from the early 20th century. The first is a rare Belle Époque emerald and diamond necklace, composed of pear cut diamond drops with diamond and emerald swags (lot 500), and the second is a wonderful Art Deco emerald and diamond panel bracelet (lot 498). Both items are textbook examples of jewels from the respective periods, and the bracelet in particular is in superb condition.
Another great example of Belle Époque design comes in the form of a seed pearl and diamond necklace, pair of bracelets and earrings, later converted from a Belle Époque sautoir. The suite is in its original fitted Carrington & Co. case and comes with interesting provenance, having belonged to Mary Endicott Carnegie (formerly Chamberlain), widow of Joseph Chamberlain and step mother to Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. The fitted case is gilt embossed to the cover with her initials, M. E. C.
One of the ‘must have’ pieces in the sale is a fantastic jewel by Bulgari in the form of a sapphire, citrine, diamond and chalcedony necklace, with detachable cross pattee design pendant. Dating from the 1970s this is a typical statement piece from the great designers of Bulgari and the quality is exceptional (lot 496).
Finally, something to tempt prospective buyers, the watch section includes two ‘Reflet’ wristwatches by Boucheron. Offered as separate lots, one in a medium size and the other small, these ‘His and Hers’ watches would make a perfect anniversary gift (lots 121 & 122).
