Modern British & 20th Century Art

The Modern British & 20^th Century Art department covers the movements that define Western Art, from the Edwardian era through two World Wars and into the Post-War and Post-Modern world. Featuring a wide selection of paintings, works on paper and sculpture, the department also has a strong focus on global and emerging contemporary artists.

Artists and movements represented include: Walter Sickert and the Camden Town Group, Albert Marquet and the Post-Impressionists, David Bomberg and the Whitechapel Boys, Patrick Heron and the St Ives School, and the YBAs, from Tracey Emin to Damien Hirst, to name a few.

Recent highlights have included the sale of Sir Stanley Spencer’s 'The Resurrection, Cookham', 1920-21 for £403,674; Gerald Leslie Brockhurst’s ‘Dorette’ for £57,500; Sir Matthew Smith’s ‘Fruit and Leaves’, 1947 for £59,800; and record-breaking prices for Augustus John and Aubrey Williams.

The department also runs successful sales of large collections including private estates, such as the Descendants of Arthur Tooth & Sons; Agi Katz, the late director of Boundary Gallery; Robert Heller, the late director of Flowers Gallery; large organisations, such as the Royal Society of Sculptors; and the estates of artists, including Leonard Rosoman and The Studio Collection of Marie Vorobieff Marevna.

The department is delighted to present four auctions annually providing a number of opportunities to buy or sell throughout the year.
