Modern British & 20th Century Art

The Modern British & 20th Century Art department covers the movements that define Modern Art, from the Edwardian era through two World Wars and into the Post-War world. Featuring a wide selection of paintings, works on paper and sculpture, the department also has a strong focus on global and emerging contemporary artists.

Recent highlights have included Henry Moore’s ‘Reclining Figure, 1932’ for £27,540; Harland Miller’s ‘A Decisive Blow Against If, 2016’ for £67,840 and Duncan Grant’s ‘Parrot Tulips, c.1957’ for £31,440; alongside record-breaking prices for Augustus John, Marion Adnams and Aubrey Williams.

In 2024, the department ran successful sales of many private estates, alongside individual auctions for the charity Paintings in Hospitals and The Collection of Mary and Alan Hobart, Founders of Pyms Gallery. In previous years we have organised sales of works from Saatchi & Saatchi, London; Agi Katz, the late director of Boundary Gallery; and the Descendants of Arthur Tooth & Sons.

Artists and movements represented include: Walter Sickert and the Camden Town Group, Albert Marquet and the Post-Impressionists, David Bomberg and the Whitechapel Boys, Patrick Heron and the St Ives School, and the YBAs, from Tracey Emin to Damien Hirst, to name a few.

The department is delighted to present four auctions annually providing a number of opportunities to buy or sell throughout the year.
