Lot 159: Marion Adnams, British 1898-1995 - La Ronde, 1963
"My first choice is lot 159, the painting La Ronde by Marion Adnams. The artist was associated with the Surrealist movement and has exhibited alongside Max Ernst and Leonora Carrington. I love the anthropomorphised trees, almost appearing to be dancing together or communing in some way".
Lot 221: Isobel Françoise Rodmell (Ilsa), French/British 18991972- Mythological scene
"My second choice is lot 221, titled Mythological Scene by Isobel Françoise Rodmell. I find the colours and movement so romantically depicted, and the figures are reminiscent of Chagall or Picasso, which would have been her contemporaries at the time".
Lot 421: Veronica Ryan OBE RA, British b.1956 - Untitled (pin-cushion)
"My next pick is lot 421, a sculpture by Veronica Ryan OBE RA. Her abstract sculpture caught my attention due to the organic nature of the wax juxtaposed by the harsh, more industrial elements of the metal pins and container. I very much enjoy Ryan’s practice in general, and the artist also won the Turner Prize in 2022, which is exciting".
Lot 78: Jessica Dismorr, British 1885-1939 - Portrait of George Barker, 1934
"My penultimate choice, but the last pick from part 1 of the Modern British and 20th Century Art sale, is a pen and ink portrait of poet George Barker by Jessica Dismorr. I love the body language of the figure, with a hand caressing his face and his gaze looking calmly out at the viewer".
And finally, "I chose one work from part 2 of the sale, The Collection of Saatchi & Saatchi. The sculpture by Lucas Samaras, titled Box #51, is enchanting with its intricate and colourful exterior. But when looking inside, there are layers to the interior with an electrical mechanism at its core".
